Our annual tradition of celebrating Discovery Day right alongside Newfoundland and Labrador started a few years back when Nat noted that he still has all the Canadian holidays on his phone calendar. So, it always looked like we had something planned for this date... and Discovery Day seemed like something we could get behind. I don't know what the festivities look like in Newfoundland but for us the rules are simple: go somewhere as a family that NO ONE in the family has been to before.
This year an iffy weather forecast kept us from planning any grand adventures. The desire to drive 2.5 hours to explore an outdoor location gets a lot lower when the forecast is thunderstorms...
So we opted to stay (surprisingly) close to home, visiting a place we drive by several times a week- Burke Lakefront Airport and the International Women's Air and Space Museum.
The museum was adorable if outdated...
But the flight simulators and space station model were hits.
As were the fighter jets (my kiddos continue to be surprisingly interested in all things military)...
We had a pleasant snack on the patio in front of the airport terminal, then took in the view from the roof of a floating restaurant - turned- software company. We did see one plane land right before we left, so we felt like we really visited an airport.
The neat thing about Discovery Day is we get this proprietary feeling about the places we explore. So now when we drive past Burke, its more than just an unfortunate use of lakefront real estate, its also ours.
